Happy Feast of the Annunciation!

I'm sorry to hear you met with ignorance from some Orthodox brethren.

Mother Teresa once said (and I'm paraphrasing) that if priesthood were a matter of worthiness or morality, the Theotokos would've been made a priest.

I like that! I don't put my trust in princes (or priests). But when I see it harming others my hackles go up!

Interesting. Always surprised when Protestants get history when it is often so avoided. Hopefully this leads to more understanding?! Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for the recommendation, Nicole! Does the book just focus on New Testament times or does it go further into early church history?

It more or less ends with the NT/apostolic era. Occasional references to post-apostolic fathers and beyond (some gem quotes from St John C, of course), but mainly for illustrative purposes. Would have loved to hear him carry some of his approach through to the post apostolic fathers, but alas.

Yeah, it sounds like it would have been interesting to push a little further into church history! Figures like St Olympia, the Desert Mothers, etc. But I'll pick it up at some point anyway.

i just ordered 'Tell Her Story' ... thanks for the recommendation, nicole.

i'm eager to hear more about early women leader's role in the early church.

so many collections of early women saints seem to compete with men by being even more self-denying and ascetic ... like ginger rogers having to dance backwards and in high heels to be on par with fred astaire!

Thankfully I'm sure most of the keyboard warriors have bigger fish to fry than a book review by little old me. Also I don't think the book is that controversial. While it's author is a proponent of women in ministry, that's a pretty broad category--and it's important to recognize the Orthodox church already has women in ministry of various kinds (choirs, chanters, readers, prosfora bakers, parish council, etc., not to mention women who teach at seminaries or serve as catechists). The book itself is, to me at least, a fairly straightforward read of women in the early church/surrounding greco-Roman culture, not a hard-hitting push for women in sacramental pastoral positions today.

Backlash to something this balanced is the exclusive purview of bona fide idiots. Perhaps we will all be spared for once?

Sadly you would be surprised by the levels of idiocy some people are capable of.
